New Callan Fire Station Under Construction (the station has now been completed new photos coming soon)

The fire service in Callan dates back to the late 1940s. The first equipment was a timber cart, hand made by a local tradesman. The cart carried some old canvas hose and a standpipe, key and bar and ladder. The cart had to be pulled manually to the incidents. The cart was stored at the Town Hall. The fire station was built at Prologue in the 1950s.

In 1948 the crew at Callan was as follows:- John Cuddihy, Frank O'Regan, John Butler, Daniel Mulrooney and Patrick Bergin.

In 1949 the crew was John Cuddihy, Frank O'Regan, Daniel Mulrooney, Patrick Bergin and James Doheny. On the 16fh May 1949 the unit attended at Hay fire at Westcourt. The equipment was brought to the fire by private car.

In 1959 a Mr. Matthew O'Malley joined the crew. The said Mr. O'Malley was a brother of the renowned artist Mr. Tony O'Malley. In 1951 the crew was as follows:- John Cuddihy Patrick Bergin, Daniel Mulrooney. James Doheny, Matthew O'Malley, Denis Holden, Paddy Cuddihy, Lar Hackett. In late 1951 Mr. Mulrooney left and Mr. Thomas Comerford joined. In the late 50s a Van and Trailer Pump were being used. In the late 60s a Commer Carmichael was bought for Callan which remained in services until the 80s when a Bedford Midi Appliance was bought and that stayed in Callan until the 90s when an "89 Volvo Appliance was brought in from England.

Ger Doheny Sub Off. Ger Doheny and Jimmy Doheny are sons of James Doheny in the 1971 photo. J.J. Dunne is a son of William Dunne. Seamus Doheny is a nephew of James Doheny.

The present crew is as follows: - Ger Doheny, S.O.; Mick Corcoran, Sub Off; Jimmy Doheny, Driver; Seamus Doheny, Driver; Pat Burke, Firefighter; J.J. Dunne, Firefighter; Ray Tobin, Firefighter; Joe O'Brien, Firefighter; Damian Ryan, Firefighter.

A new fire appliance has been delivered and a new fire station has been completed at the site of the old station.
